2 Million Minutes - A Documentary Calculating the Educational Divide

How do most American high school students spend the time between high school and college? How different are American students from students throughout the world? How do decisions made during this time effect their futures?

If you watched this film, let us know what you think.

This video was very thought provoking. On the one hand, I understand the need to push students in order to compete in the world arena, however I still believe that creating well-rounded individuals should remain a priority. How can we foster the drive and motivation found in competing nations while still encouraging a balanced development in our students?

I was finally able to view this film... It is a very powerful look at education across cultures. I can definitely understand why people would react negatively to much of it. Our (US) kids do look unfocused relative to their Indian and Chinese counterparts. It does seem that the film implies that the US educational system expects less of students than do the systems in India and China (i.e, our students receive less homework, spend less time studying, courses are less rigorous, etc.) However, I think the main message is ultimately that rather than giving students more homework and requiring more study, we should be focusing on how to get kids to think critically, collaborate and communicate (in languages OTHER than English!) with people from diverse backgrounds, etc. I found the film to be really thought-provoking and valuable.

There's a great blog tied to the film at:
